Mary's Website!

Mary Timony’s latest solo project, The Golden Dove, lends a refreshing twist to traditional song structures, exploring sound and composition in her own inimitable style. Musically, Timony mixes up 60s psych folk, experimental electro grooves and lengthy prog-rock guitar jams. What results is music of melancholy beauty, sweetness tinged with darkness, conjuring images of middle earth, fairies, goblins and ghosts that lurk in every corner. [...]

new video, new mp3
as Mary and her ensemble begin their US tour withSonic Youth (http://www.sonicyouth.com) this week, we're pleased to present a quicktime video for "Dr. Cat", one of the standout tracks from 'The Golden Dove'. Directed by longtime collaborator Brett Vapnek (Helium, Sleater-Kinney, Spoon), the clip is available here.

We also have an MP3 of "Musik and Charming Melodee" from the same album now available for download at the link just above.

Mary's version of recent events:

"the mary timony band is playing shows through the south opening for sonic youth aug 1-8. we also will be playing th 9th at ladyfest DC, and 10th in NY. later in August Mary will be doing shows with le tigre..... and going to Europe sept. 23- oct 13. the official mary timony web page (marytimony.com) will be up in a few weeks. there is a mary song on the new KRS (http://www.killrockstars.com) compilation CD 'fields and streams'.

"Katya Gorker who projects movies behind the MT band, filmed us being randomly pulled over by the Texas narcotics police and will be projecting this along with other classics on the next tour. heres the story: it felt like it was around 105 degrees outside, we were on the border of mexico and texas. when we were pulled over, the police men were quite rude, asking questions about why my hair color is different on my license, and if we played Christian music. when they asked me who was in the van, and I told them the members of the band, and the "film crew" suddenly they looked slightly embarrassed, and proceeded to be much more polite. we still had to allow them to search the entire van, and while they did, we all did a choreographed line dance behind the van for the next 20 minutes, jumping around in unison. they didn't bat an eye. we gave them t-shirts, XL, of course.... we filmed them holding the t shirts and smiling. good thing, because no one else would take our XL shirts on this tour. we were considering all wearing them on stage, they come down to my knees, but thats a different story. anyway. somewhere there are two cops in texas with mary timony t shirts in their dressers, with memories of finding nothing but echinacea and pepto bismol in a van they wanted to score some excitement from."

06/07/02"Dr. Cat" video on the way
Just days after the release of her latest solo album, 'The Golden Dove', Mary Timony visited New York to begin work with director Brett Vapnek on a video for "Dr. Cat". It will be up and playable on this site as soon as we can get Matt Ransford on the telephone to tell us how.

— Fresh from a sold-out show at NYC’s Joe’s Pub debuting material from ‘The Golden Dove,’ Mary will also be playing at the Khyber Pass in Philly on April 26. Watch the Matador site at the end of April for an MP3 from the album, which might or might not be the same song that so many lucky Jane subscribers will be receiving on the magazine’s next sampler in a couple weeks. Mary and her backing ensemble will take their show on the road this summer. We’ll also have a video interview for you early next week.

Mary writes:

“I will be on tour from June 6th to the end of the month in the US of A. and hope to go to Europe in September. I am going to be playing at Ladyfest DC this August, also doing live scoring for a silent movie ‘Vampyre’ by Dryer at the Coolidge in Boston in July. Brett Vapnek and I are making a video in a few weeks, probably for the song ‘Dr. Cat.’ There will be dancing in the video. here are some other shows that are just me alone on keyboard:

april 25 smith college
april 26 khyber pass, philadelphia
april 27 black swan pub, tivoli ny”

Mary Timony Is Real —
‘The Golden Dove’ preview live at Joe’s Pub, NYC, April 11

Mary Timony will be performing material from her stunning new album ‘The Golden Dove’ at Joe’s Pub, 475 Lafayette St. NYC (Astor Place, 6 train) on Thursday, April 11. Showtime is 7:30pm. Tickets are $12 (212-539-8777)

This event is open to the public (ie. you) and we strongly encourage all smart persons to check out Mary’s new songs. We think this album is her finest moment to date, be it solo, Helium, Green IV, Autoclave, you name it. But we’re supposed to say that — we wanna know what you think.

A Brett Vapnek directed video for one of the Golden Dove tracks will be completed soon, and look for a full North American tour by Mary this spring and summer.

02/12/02
We can happily confirm that Mary Timony’s new album is called ‘The Golden Dove’ and shall be released in May, accompanied by a tour of all the places that matter. If you live somewhere else, don’t be offended, that’s just a form of hyperbole, we meant nothing personal by it.

We asked for an update, and Mary delivered: “I’m in the midst of recording, I’ve done basic tracks, and I’m going to Virginia this week to record with Mark Linkus. Also look for a song on a Kill Rock Stars compilation later in the new year. I’ve also hired a band of 12 dwarves to play the bells and pipes on my record. OK, that part’s not true... I hope to have the record out in the spring. I just got two cats? Okay, that’s not relevant either.”

09/07/01 New Recordings and a Gig You Can’t Buy Tickets to
Mary is scheduled to begin recording her new album in early November, assisted by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse at his Virginia studio. Whether or not this is a Helium album or Mary’s 2nd solo album has yet to be determined (by her) but when we know, we’ll tell you. Mary will also be playing at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on 11 October, along with Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks in what we’re told is an event being presented by Jane Magazine. This seems like a good time to mention that one of the label’s founders recently tried to peddle his entire collection of Sassy back issues on eBay, only to be sent a rubber check. Letters of sympathy can be sent c/o Matador. One sensible person at the label suggested that maybe we shouldn’t mention this gig as it is probably not open to the public, but lots of things aren’t open to the public. Ivy league Universities. Florida polling stations. If you have a problem with it, perhaps you should hop in a time machine and come back to earth as Jane Pratt. Or Todd Pratt.

12/06/00The non solo point of view
In news that will excite and thrill denizens of Matador’s bulletin board like nothing short of a Chavez sighting, Mary Timony tells us that Helium have begun writing and playing new material. No news yet on recording plans, but hey, you’ve got to write the songs first! Mary is also hard at work on new Spells material with Carrie Brownstein.

07/27/00A travelling musician, and a chatting one, too
Mary is currently in the UK supporting Sleater-Kinney on their sold-out tour, but once that trip is done, she’s on her way to Olympia, WA for Ladyfest, the women’s music and art festival featuring Sleater-Kinney, Jean Smith, Cat Power, Gina Birch and many more bands, spoken word performers, film makers, etc. And gURL.com are hosting a chat with Mary on August 2 at 6pm EST.
