Fucked Up formed in Toronto in 2002, high-school friends influenced by first- and second-wave hardcore bands like Minor Threat and NOFX.  It was instantly apparent that they were not carbon-copy punks. Their first 7" was entitled No Pasarán after an anti-fascist slogan from the Spanish Civil War. It was also ferociously melodic and inventive, setting the scene for a string of 25 singles over the next four years that combined political commentary with incredible musicianship and a sense of theater. 7/29/08--'Chemistry of Common Life' Pre-Order

Fucked Up's second album, 'The Chemistry Of Common Life,' will be in stores on October 7. The record synthesizes their numerous musical directions into an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living). Merging elements of hardcore riffage with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds and vocals, (including 18 guitars on the first single, the fatalistic "No Epiphany"), the music remains iconoclastic and startling, with Pink Eyes' vocals front and center. Guest musicians, of course, abound, notably gorgeous female voices such as Brooklyn's Vivian Girls and Toronto's Katie Stelmanis. The perspective is idiosyncratically scientific: amid soaring guitar chords, the title track pays homage to the random chemical processes that created life on this planet. Though Fucked Up remain punks at heart - if quixotically diverse ones - they have created a great, weird, heavy record that stubbornly sticks in your brain and your heart.

Toronto's Fucked Up have just finished recording their second album. It will come out on Matador worldwide on October 7. Entitled The Chemistry Of Common Life, it contains 11 tracks on the CD and 12 tracks on the double vinyl. This sprawling, multi-instrumental epic is "basically about rebirth and the Sun. And lightning," according to guitarist 10,000 Marbles. The sound is incredibly dense, featuring 10-15 guitar tracks on many songs, along with flutes, organs, and French horn, with an elegant clarity and sense of purpose. The record picks up where 2006's Hidden World left off, in terms of the band's characteristic monumentality, but injects a newfound urgency and unease which the mystical lyrical concerns only amplify. Guest performers include Katie Stelmanis and the Vivian Girls on vocals, Max McCabe-Locos on organ (formerly of the Deadly Snakes, also featured on Fucked Up's Year Of The Pig), and many others. Matador and What's Your Rupture? are pleased to announce a joint release: the Year Of The Pig EP from Toronto's Fucked Up. Out worldwide on July 22, the EP is an expanded version of the 12" single released by WYR? in mid-2007 (and by Vice in the UK in early 2008). In addition to the original 18-minute title track and the flipside, "The Black Hats," there are three edits of the title track and three unreleased tracks. Each edit and each unreleased track will be featured on one of three 7" singles, each with a different sleeve, to be released in the US, the UK, and Japan respectively. "Year Of The Pig" is the second in a series of songs based on the Chinese zodiac. It is about the plight of sex workers in Canada. The initial release, and a companion concert, generated $4,000 for a prostitution rights charity in Toronto. Read more about the issues, and the notorious Robert Pickton case, at this blog post by the band. Featuring keyboards, an ethereal female guest vocal and multiple, interlocking musical sections, it is Fucked Up's most ambitious work to date. Here is a 256K MP3 of the US edit: "Year Of The Pig (US 7" edit)" (256K MP3) Track listings: 12": Year Of The Pig / The Black Hats 7" (US): Year Of The Pig (US Edit) / Mustaa Lunta (new track) 7" (UK): Year Of The Pig (US Edit) / Anorak City (new track — Another Sunny Day cover) 7" (Japan): Year Of The Pig (Japanese Edit) / For My Friends (new track) CDEP: All of the above Fucked Up will be playing three shows in Calgary later this month, and will tour Europe throughout July and August.
